Edward Livingston Chatfield's Family

Maternal Grand Parents  (Not pictured)

David Herrick
-- The third born of twelve children of Isaac Herrick and Prudence Avery, was Edward's maternal grandfather. David was born in Worthington, Massachusetts, on July 7, 1790, thirty-two days after Rhode Island became the 13th Colony to ratify the Constitution. Midway between his 21st and 22nd birthday, in Preston, New London County, Connecticut, David married Zipporah Avery, then 18. Their January 5, 1812, wedding preceded the War of 1812 by five months -- the period when the Mississippi and Missouri Territories were being organized.  The daughter of William and Margaret Avery, Zipporah was born on August 28, 1793, in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. Her arrival came just 18 days after the start of the French Revolution. Zipporah and David would be among the nation's first generation to pioneer Ohio. There they delivered babies number six through ten, while their first five children had been born in Worthington, Massachusetts. Baby number two, the infant who would become Edward's mother, Margaret Prudentia, was born in Worthington on May 19, 1818. Some time after their fifth child died in Worthington, Massachusetts, 1825, the couple moved to Twinsburg, Ohio. Esther Brewster, their sixth child was born in Twinsburg in 1827, the year that the state of New York abolished slavery. The Herricks were farmers in Twinsburg, their living maintained by crop sales for 19 years before Zipporah passed away. Their children, by birth order, were:

· William Avery (b. 1814)

· Margaret Prudentia (May 19, 1818) -- Margaret would become Edward's mother.
· James O. (b. 1820)
· Mary H. (b. 1823)
· Esther # 1 (b. 1825) Died at birth
· Esther Brewster (b. 1827)
· David Jr. (b. 1829)

· Zipporah  #1 (b.1833 - d.1897)
· Mary J. (b. 1845 - d. 1848)
· Zipporah I. #2 (b.1847- d.1848)

Zipporah (the mother) died on September 30, 1848, and was buried in the Herrick plot at the Locust Grove Cemetery in Twinsburg. David remarried in 1851 at the age of 61. Like Zipporah, his second wife Julia Austin came from Connecticut. Their marriage resulted in the birth of Austin O. Herrick, who was born in Twinsburg on September 22, 1852. David Herrick died in Twinsburg on January 26, 1867. He was buried in the Herrick plot along side his first wife in Twinsburg. His death occurred at the time that both the Senate and the House were considering impeachment of Andrew Johnson.

The Paternal Grandparents

Isaac Chatfield, the son of Joel Chatfield and Ruth Stoddard, was born in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut, on January 15, 1787. Isaac's father, Joel, had served in the War of 1812 under Colonel Sill. Isaac's birth came just three months after the Continental Congress had adopted the dollar and decimal coinage. The infant who would become his wife was born that same year--a half year before the U.S. Constitution was adopted. When George Washington took office in 1789, Isaac and his future wife were just two years old.

In 1806, at the age of 19, while still in Derby, New Haven, Connecticut, Isaac married
Lucy Tomlinson, of Woodbridge, Connecticut. Born on March 20, 1787, Lucy Tomlinson was the fifth of twelve children of Levi Tomlinson and Amelia Beard. The 1806 wedding occurred during Thomas Jefferson's second term of office, around the time of the return of Lewis and Clark following their exploration of the Louisiana Territory--an eventful time in American history. The couple settled in Seymour, Connecticut, barely six miles away from Lucy's birthplace, where Isaac farmed while taking college coursework.
