Not until retirement from public services did the McCartys set aside vital time to properly address the 116+ Civil War letters that they had carefully safeguarded for over four decades, wonderfully descriptive letters penned home by Private Edward Livingston Chatfield of the 113th Illinois Volunteers, Company "B" -- a relative. Both Terry and Peg hold Master's degrees with emphases in the social sciences, human behavior and history their strong interests, the letters a banquet feast to be savored and enjoyed -- not to be rushed through like fast food. Terry assumed the role of principal author; Peg, the coauthor editor, and their two children, Kim and Dave -- reviewers who gently nudged significant improvements. In many ways this wonderful story had become a family project. When not researching and writing, Terry and Peg enjoy long walks, swimming, bicycling, reading, gardening, RV camping, story telling, and visiting their "kids" and grandchildren.
